Tools to Explore

When laying down the general lighting composition

  • Use a separate layer for general lighting composition
  • Set your layer to multiply as a blending style
  • Lay down a wash of your shadow tone with the paint bucket
  • Paint areas of light with a brush with very low opacity and hardness

When creating visible light in the air or sources

  • Use separate layers for each effect (and sometimes duplicate them)
  • Set your layers to screen, overlay, or soft light (experiment!)
  • You may want to reduce layer opacity
  • Use the selection tool or polygonal lasso to only paint in certain areas
  • Use Gaussian blur to help soften edges
  • The gradient tool (set to color->transparency) allows light to "fade out"
  • You can adjust colors to a layer with Hue/Saturation controls
  • Photoshop allows for more extensive layer blending options like outer glow and inner glow.
  • You may need to adjust your general lighting composition layer to let these effects really shine
