SETC 2021
Creating Augmented Reality Filters as"Masks" - Will Lowry

Software used in the presentation:

  • Lens Studio
  • Snap Camera
  • Photopea

Basic Steps

Creating a distortion filter in Lens Studio

  • Add Object, scroll down, and select Face Stretch
  • Adjust the tracking points on the face
  • Toggle between rendered view and live view in the panel on the right
  • If you want to add a facial feature, Add Object / Face Inset
    • Select which facial feature from the Inspector Tab
  • Publish Lens when finished

Creating a 2D mask in Photopea/LensStudio

Prepping the image in Photopea.
  • Use the Object Wand in Photopea to auto-select the mask perimeter
    • This works best with a solid background.
    • Right click, select "Inverse", and press delete.
    • The checkerboard pattern indicates successful transparency.
  • Use Object Wand to remove eyes or other elements as necessary.
  • Use Eraser to clean edges as necessary
    • You may need to go to the Select Menu, then Deselect first
  • Save as a .PNG
Creating the filter in Lens Studio
  • Add Object, scroll down, and select Face Image
  • In the Inspector panel, select Texture, then +, then From Files.
    • Browse to your image and select.
  • Resize with transform controls as necessary
  • In the Inspector panel, set Target to Head Binding / Face Inset
    • Set Mode to Look at Direction
  • Publish Lens when finished

Wearing the Filter with SnapCamera

  • Go to My Lenses in Lens Studio
  • Click the Link icon by the Lens to copy the link.
  • Paste the link in the Search bar in SnapCamera
  • Your lens should appear!
    • I recommend clicking the star to Favorite it
    • You may also want to set Hot Keys in the Favorite menu by clicking the star in the upper left, then the small keyboard in the upper right of that menu.
    • Your hotkeys should work even while in other programs—so choose them carefully!
  • To 'wear' the lens in another program, have SnapCamera running first.
  • Wherever you set your Camera (in Zoom it's a small arrow by the camera icon), select "SnapCamera" instead of "Integrated Camera," "USB Camera," or whatever your traditional camera is.
